About Us

Rooted in Learning, Blossoming Together Through Play

Desert Roots Academy was founded to inspire families to play and to connect with nature through outdoor learning and to foster a sense of community. We believe children thrive when they spend time outside—and it's even better when they do it together.

Hello! My name is Alyssa, and I’m the proud mom of a curious & spirited toddler who loves to explore the world around her. I was raised in a small town in Ohio where my childhood was filled with outdoor adventures—climbing hay bales in our barn, making mud pies in flower pots, “hiking” between my grandmothers’ homes, and riding dirt bikes with my family on weekends. Whether I was snacking in my grandma’s garden or relaxing under a tree, nature was always a part of my daily life.

My passion for learning and teaching began early. As a child, I loved playing "teacher" with friends and my younger brother. In high school, I was actively involved in FFA, where I held several leadership roles and helped organize Ag Day—an event that brought over 800 elementary students to learn about animals and agriculture. I initially pursued a degree in Agricultural Education, but like many college students, I shifted gears and ultimately earned a degree in Communication.

After graduating, I still felt called to teach, which led me to join Teach for America. That decision brought my husband and me to Las Vegas, where I taught in CCSD schools for six years. When our daughter was born, I made the decision to stay home with her. My love for teaching hasn’t faded—it’s simply evolved. That passion, along with a shift in perspective, is what inspired the creation of Desert Roots Academy.

In my free time, you can usually find me in the kitchen cooking or baking, staying active with a workout, or enjoying life with my daughter, husband, and our dog.
